Let’s be honest, explaining how food travels through the body can be a bit of a challenge. It’s one thing to talk about the mouth, stomach, intestines, and all the steps in between, but it’s another to help kids actually picture it. That’s why I love using this 3D digestive system craft. It turns a complicated process into something students can literally hold in their hands.

Do you want this resource?
You can get it, along with many other materials, in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.
With just four illustrated pages, students can build their own vertical digestive system model. Each page includes two parts of the system, from start to finish. As they color, cut, fold, and glue each section, they’re reinforcing what each organ does and how everything connects.
I’ve used this activity during our human body unit, and it always sparks great conversations. One student said, “So food really has to go through all of this?” Yep! And once they build the model, it finally clicks.
Here’s what’s included:
- 4 printable pages showing all stages of digestion
- Simple directions that are easy for kids to follow
- Step-by-step photo instructions for smooth assembly
This project is ideal for science class, but it also works beautifully as an independent task for early finishers or a creative option during homeschool. Visual learners love seeing the digestive path laid out in order, and kinesthetic learners benefit from actually building the process.
For an extra challenge, I sometimes have students label each part and write a quick description of what happens there. It’s a great way to combine science and writing without feeling like extra work.
If you’re looking for a creative way to make digestion memorable, this is one of those resources that makes a lasting impact. I’d love to know how you might use this with your students. Let me know what ideas come to mind!
